LADDERS

ANTÓNIO NUNES DOS SANTOS
Alcongosta, Fundão

Ladders made from chestnut wood, traditionally used in the region for fruit picking, handmade using techniques António Nunes dos Santos learned from his father. The wood is allowed to wilt and is used rough, the steps being cut to the desired length, bored and mounted. When the tree is weak, the workers set up a pair of ladders to enable them to be used by two people at the same time, one on each side.
